Interim Data Science Strategist for a Special Project

January 28, 2022 Summer Foote

A multi-billion-dollar grocer was struggling to fill a full-time Chief Data Officer role (a new position for the company), and this was slowing down its ability to optimize its ecommerce fulfillment network—a critical project. Unable to wait any longer, the Chief Customer and Digital Officer reached out to Business Talent Group (BTG) for interim coverage while revisiting the hiring plan. Recognizing an opportunity to help the client revise the plan while simultaneously getting a handle on backed up work, BTG suggested a short-term consulting engagement.

BTG provided a former Apple data science manager and Big 3 strategy consultant with deep experience in business value creation and digital transformation using data analytics, visualization, and governance. The interim leader was able to quickly step in and help the team by further defining the functional strategy—which included developing a governance structure and analytical framework to ensure the data platform served the current and future needs of all users, both internal and external. â€‹With the data science project back in motion, the executive team had more time and bandwidth to address long-term hiring needs, and the eventual new hire was better equipped for success.
