Interim CIO and CISO with Supporting IT Experts to Stand Up a New Function

February 18, 2022 Summer Foote

A large healthcare company had recently launched a subsidiary and was in the process of setting up the organization and laying out the infrastructure. Permanent CIO and CISO hires would be necessary down the road, but the CHRO recognized that the ideal leaders in the near term would have skills and experience specific to standing up a new IT function and establishing the new roles. Thus, she reached out to Business Talent Group (BTG), looking for hands-on leaders to step in as interim CIO and CISO—with experience building the function from the ground up—as well as several IT experts to support them.

BTG provided experienced talent at multiple levels:

  • To fill the interim CIO position, BTG delivered a seasoned healthcare analytics executive with CTO and CIO experience spanning multiple industries, as well as a robust skill set in technology and systems implementation, IT systems strategy and development, and corporate strategy.
  • For the interim CISO position, BTG provided a senior security strategy and risk executive with experience designing and building enterprise cloud security systems and leading large security architecture teams.
  • To support these leaders, BTG provided several consultants, including a senior IT architect, an IT design consultant, and a technical PM.

The talent took a hands-on approach and collaborated with leaders of other business units to ultimately create a product delivery function, develop a tech platform and IT infrastructure, and deliver a beta release for physician users. The interim CIO built out expert tech teams for user-centered design, software engineering, and IT functions. Additionally, he led technology due diligence for product acquisitions and partnerships.

The interim CISO stepped in to work with the product and development teams on business requirements, maintained and executed on security-related controls, assessed the current risk state, provided recommendations, and directed the staff in security planning and design.

After the temporary engagements concluded, the CHRO made permanent C-suite hires to lead the team long-term.
